Red wine
Right, I’m wondering if I’ve had something wrong with my tastebuds all my life.
Keep on trying red wine of different types but I don’t get it, all this fruity, mellow, delicious shit, I ain’t getting and I don’t know why. I’d love to get the fruity, delicious bit. Done the let it breathe thing and the you need a bottle before you get it thing but just don’t.

My face just screws up , tongue hangs out and feels like it’s dried out every time.

Over to you aficionados or alkys to let me know where I’m going wrong.

Re: Red wine
Try drinking it from a glass instead of straight from the bottle.

That's tannins for you.

Re: Red wine
It’s a taste you may have to learn rather than just acquire if you are used to beer.

Remember, in places that actually grow the stuff, it is often as cheap as water, so it’s only poncy where snobs have been talking bullshit about it.

Do you like olives?

Re: Red wine
Give it time. I used to prefer white to red but now I’d chose red every time.

Italian obviously…… primitivo, chianti, barolo my personal favourites.

Having said that, I discovered Bardolino Chiaretto rose in Lake Garda and I’m currently working my way through that.

Re: Red wine
Get a decanter or even just a large jug.

Makes a huge difference to any red wine, even if done just before drinking - even better if earlier.

I'm not an expert but the wine can depend on your price point.

Try Majestic they'll let you taste loads and can give advice.

If you're a supermarket wine buyer, try Aldi - a Rioja or a Merlot.

One glass with the main course, provided it’s red meat, then move on to something else

Otherwise, yeah it’s not a repeat binge drink for me.

Re: Red wine
Having lived in Europe for 15 years I have realised that a £10 bottle of red in Uk would be €4 in France and €2.50 in Spain.

Unfortunately it’s got worse due to Brexit and the fact that Brits have to spend over £20 for a reasonable bottle that I will pay €8-10 for.

Stick to beer….

Re: Red wine
It sounds like you’re drinking shit wine. It’s best if you open it at least half an hour before drinking. I can’t think of a better combination than a good red wine and a decent steak.

Red wine and cheese
or Red wine and 90% Lindt chocolate

Or a decent choc biscuit (ege hob nob), strong cheddar and red wine.

Pizza and red wine

Curry and red wine

Re: Red wine
I very rarely spend over £7 on a bottle and have become adept at choosing a half decent cheaper wine. If that makes me a kind of reverse wine snob then so be it. Actually I prefer white these days, it used to be the other way round.

Re: Red wine
Have always drank red, Aus/NZ predominantly, and am in no way a wine snob/aficionado, but had a bottle of this recently and it's fucking excellent:

New Zealand wine is pretty good.

Re: Red wine
Normally a 8 quid bottle of supermarket wine is half decent. Agree about the quality in France/Italy, bought some 3 euros bottles that were of similar quality.

Re: Red wine
Probably a whole taste range then rather than just red wine you don't like.

What about mature cheddar - do you find it too much?
